Early American Fangirls

Description

Finally, I can start coloring and uploading pieces from my massive webcomic sketchdump! This is a conceptual illustration for my comic, Dualité.

And yes, the giant hulking old guy in the picture is actually a bigger fangirl than....the girl.

This is Marcus 'Arlo' Frotscher and Romana 'Romy' Gallo, being dorks. Arlo is a scientist, and also is my main character Jobe's father, and Romy is a young stage actress/socialite who does not much like Jobe, but gets along famously with his dad, here. Both of them share a love of belting campy songs at parties, and a love of various members of the Roosevelt family.

Theodore Roosevelt was in office as President during this time, and his daughter Alice was one of the first (if not the first) modern American celebrity, and was extremely popular during and after her father's presidency. Every young woman at the time was in awe of Alice, and that includes Romy, here - she's a die-hard fan of Alice and collects her postcards (and because Dualité takes place in Cincinnati in 1905, you can imagine Romy's elation at the news of Alice marrying a Congressman from Cincinnati!).

Theodore, of course, was no slouch himself. He was famous for a big, robust personality and bravery, and Arlo is probably an even more hardcore fan of him than Romy is of Alice. She's got postcards, yeah...but Arlo's got a signed photograph of Theo himself (which Romy is looking at). U jelly, bro?

This was mostly a learning exercise for me in backgrounds. I used Google Sketchup (thank you God for this program) for a basic room shape and drew over it from there. I don't think the characters mesh enough - or maybe they do too much - but it's all part of the learning process, I guess. I like the vases and the hope chest.

The pictures on the walls are all textures I found from CGTextures.com, and from various textures collected through others from around deviantART. If you see your texture here, please tell me it is yours so that I can properly credit you!

also I know that rooms were not decorated this way in 1905. again, learning exercise.
also I know now that perspective-wise they are probably too low to the ground.
also Romy is NOT the main character of Dualité.
.......despite her being in every picture from it that I have uploaded so far.

Nice work, Gina. I get what you mean about the perspective thing. It's because the lines on the floor isn't sloped enough... Of course, you could just chalk it up to the room being larger than it appears (which would mean the room is about 2-3 times the size of the viewing area).

But judging from the size of that vase at the end of the room... Yeah, a bit more angle to the perspective would be fine, too. =P
